In order to become a Jeep mechanic, a Chrysler mechanic, or any other type of Mopar mechanic you will need the correct training. This is where Mopar has stepped in to partner with trade schools and community colleges all across the nation to teach the Mopar Career Automotive Program (MCAP). The MCAP is a blended learning program where a Mopar mechanic school partners with a student and a Mopar dealer to provide the best skilled training possible.
Students who attend a Mopar mechanic school will earn training to become a Jeep mechanic, Chrysler mechanic, Dodge mechanic, Ram mechanic, Alfa Romeo mechanic, or Fiat mechanic all within the automotive training program. Just like other automotive training, students who complete the MCAP will earn an Associate’s Degree and will be in higher demand than students who complete general automotive training. If you want to become a Mopar mechanic through a Mopar mechanic school you will need to complete the program which lasts 18-24 months.
Wait until you hear the best part; you get to gain great experience by working in a Mopar dealer which is built into the MCAP. The MCAP provides future mechanics with a mix of classroom, lab, and dealer learning experiences which equips students to go straight from Mopar mechanic school to a career in a Mopar dealership.
Here’s what you can expect to learn in MCAP at a Mopar mechanic school:
Depending on which Mopar mechanic school you attend, you will graduate with different levels of FCA US LLC certification. No matter what, all MCAP graduates will be at a level 1 certification by the end of the Mopar training. Some schools require more work-study or internship hours which will give graduates a level 2 certification. Along with this, all students who finish the MCAP will earn their Associate’s Degree in Occupational Studies.
Because of the integrated learning between your Mopar mechanic school and the Chrysler, Jeep, Ram, Dodge, or Fiat dealer, students often continue working at their sponsoring dealers. This provides a sense of security for students graduating from the MCAP that students earning a general automotive degree will not have. Below are a list of the highest paying jobs you could attain through Mopar training/experience and their average salaries according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (2017).
First-Line Supervisors of Mechanics, Installers, and Repairers
Mobile Heavy Equipment Mechanics
Heavy Vehicle and Mobile Equipment Service Technicians and Mechanics
Electrical and Electronics Installers and Repairers
The average salary for an automotive technician at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is about $47,000. Future mechanics need to consider that salary depends on the auto mechanic’s certifications, years of experience, and desire for growth. To earn higher wages, auto mechanics should work through Automotive Service Excellence certifications to prove their ability in many different areas.
Just as any educational program, the time it takes to complete will vary from student to student and from school to school. As the program is built within an Associate’s Degree, the MCAP can be completed in 18-24 months but can last longer or shorter depending on course load and student success.
Every MCAP graduate completes an FCA US LLC certification level 1. Depending on the school, students have the ability through work-study and internships to earn a level 2 certification.
Students entering the Mopar CAP may reach out to dealers on their own if they would like to be with a specific dealership for the program. If a student does not know any dealerships or does not have a preference, they should reach out to the school they are attending for assistance in finding a sponsoring dealership. Students do not need to commit to working for the dealer upon graduation although it is a great opportunity and a major benefit of completing the MCAP.
FCA US LLC does not offer any scholarships for their program but many different schools will provide scholarships. Student’s best bet is to check their school’s scholarship listings and to look for outside scholarships such as the Future Mechanic Grant. Check out our scholarships page for more information.
